My One Word

A few weeks ago, I posted that I was on a quest to discover my #OneWord for the new year. I believe that God uncovered my one word for 2021.

Grit = “firmness of mind or spirit, unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger (Merriam-Webster),” or “courage and resolve, strength of character (Dictionary Online).” In regards to personality traits, grit is “perseverance of effort with a passion for the end in mind (Wikipedia).” Psychologist Angela Duckworth defined grit as “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.”

In her book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, Angela Duckworth describes grit,

“…there are no shortcuts to excellence. Developing real expertise, figuring out really hard problems, it all takes time―longer than most people imagine….you’ve got to apply those skills and produce goods or services that are valuable to people….Grit is about working on something you care about so much that you’re willing to stay loyal to it…it’s doing what you love, but not just falling in love―staying in love.”

Duckworth, Angela. Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, Narrated by Angela Duckworth, AudiobooksNow, 2016. Audiobook

My pastor Nick Cleveland gave a sermon earlier this month about perseverance on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at Grace Church in Wooster, Ohio. He challenged every one who was listening to persevere even amidst the most difficult circumstances. He asked, “Do you feel like giving up when faced with trials?” His remedy was grit. He mentioned the book by Angela Duckworth. He gave me a hint toward my quest for my One Word.

So my quest continued.

I recalled that Jon Gordon had offered an Action Plan to discover your One Word. So I share that link with you. It’s never too late to discover your One Word for the year. As soon as you find your One Word, you get to have that word guide you for the next year, whether you find your One Word in January or in June. followed the outline from Jon Gordon.

My One Word last year for 2020 was ASCEND. Little did I know that I would need to ASCEND to greater heights to deal with the worldwide pandemic and its global aftermath. I found my One Word helped me soar amid the negative, doomsday media posts and the fear-filled resignation of many people. I chose to ASCEND rather than descend into depression and fear. By faith, I moved forward knowing that I could ASCEND above the chaos with positive focus and good thoughts. With prayer and a personal faith in God, I keep the my One Word as a touchstone into the new year.

So using the action plan, I jotted down my notes. I offer my notes on my quest here. It took me a few days, then a couple of weeks to clarify my One Word. Last year, it was over a weekend. But this year, I traverse many days in search of my One Word. As things came to mind, I added it to my list.

Grit found me. As I contemplated, grit, GRIT resonated with me. Once you find your One Word, next you share it with your family and your accountability group. You can post it online with the hashtag #oneword. But before I posted my One Word, I wanted to find an image for reference. I found on the USGA–The United States Golf Association–an image of grains of sand from a sand trap.

This post is part of the action plan to share widely and enthusiastically my One Word. I trust that you will consider joining me to Get Your One Word. So I challenge you to take the One Word Challenge today. Let me know if you do take the challenge. I’d like to know. If you have your One Word, then please share it with me. Moreover, if you have another method for keeping your focus, then please share that method with me too.

My One Word is GRIT

Last year’s One Word was…ASCEND

I found my ONE WORD last year before COVID19 and ironically it helped me shape my response to this global pandemic. Last year, God gave me the word, ASCEND. I could rise above and make a positive contribution to the world while making a difference in the lives of others.

I have not discovered my one word for 2021 yet, but I am on a quest to find it soon. My ONE WORD helped me shape my destiny by marshaling my power, by clarifying my purpose, and unleashing my passion. I challenge you to find your ONE WORD this month. You have only one life, make it count. Find your One Word today.

How to care for others amid #Coronavirus pandemic

As a precaution, I got fitted for a mask to care for others as chaplain at work

As we start a new day and a new week, I am reminded how I can care for others amid the #COVID19 pandemic. In Hebrews 13:13, the writer says,

“And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13:16‬ ‭NASB‬‬
https://www.bible.com/100/heb.13.16.nasb

Wherever you live—in a subdivision, trailer court, home owners association, apartment building, duplex, assisted living, farm, ranch, reserve, reservation, row-house, homeless, or nomad, I encourage you to do good and share with your neighbors. Where you are at any moment is the space you get to do good and to share.

Sure, you might be scared. I am fearful. But together we can do good and share with those around us. You can maintain social distancing and catch someone’s attention and check-in with them asking, “Hey! You okay today? If you need something, get a hold of me. I can get you groceries or go get meds for you. Just checking in.” Then, wait for their response.

My wife, Melissa and I did a check-in with our neighbors yesterday. Some neighbors were home. Others were not home at the time. A few reached out via social media to indicate that they are alright. Most were grateful for the check-in. We also got to do an errand for a neighbor who was not feeling well and needed an item picked up.

You can care for others by doing good and sharing. You can care and stay relatively safe. So, care for your neighbors. Check-in. Care by doing good and sharing.

Nearly a third of human trafficking victims are CHILDREN

It’s hard to believe but children are victims of human trafficking!

Sadly, according to the UNODC, children are victims of human trafficking worldwide in increasing numbers. The most helpless are the most harmed.

Yet, there is HOPE!

Melissa and I are so happy that our church, Grace Church in Wooster, Ohio partners with Asia’s Hope in Columbus to rescue at-risk children in SE Asia. Asia’s Hope rescues at-risk children providing a wonderful home environment where they learn about God and His values as well as provide food, shelter, clothes, and an education. Moreover, they provide a family for the at-risk children in their care.

Please pray for Micah, Melissa, and I as we seek to raise funds to visit and to care for these at-risk children. You may also give to our GoFundMe campaign and share our project. We plan to visit the orphan homes in August 2020. Thank you!

Many thanks

We are so grateful for the many generous gifts that have been made towards our trip to show love to the orphans. We are sad that the trip is postponed until August, but we are overwhelmed by God’s people.

To date, we have raised $3,430. Praise God!

https://www.gofundme.com

We’d like to finish this GoFundMe campaign on March 17–St. Patrick’s Day in honor a great missionary who had a love for people, different than himself. Therefore, we have $1,570 remaining to meet our goal.

Would you join us in reaching that goal?

Melissa and I saw firsthand how one can care for orphans in SE Asia by going to visit them. Read the story of *Sara who came as a young orphan child to discover a hopeful path from hopelessness. (*Sara is a pseudonym for her security)

Starting on Wednesday, March 10, we will be counting down the final seven days to the end of our campaign. We’d love your support and shares.

So, please pray that we can raise $1,570 by March 17. You can still give as God leads you. Please also share our need to reach the goal.

Trip Postponed

Sadly, we have determined with the help of Grace Church that due to the health risks abroad fueled by the Coronavirus, we are going to have to postpone the SE Asia trip. For the safety of the team & the safety of the orphan children as well as the home staff in Cambodia and Thailand, the trip is postponed.

We will still continue to raise support to go on a future trip on August 4-17, 2020. We will keep you updated and keep striving to our goal of raising $5,000 for the trip.

Care for Orphans, Send the Butlers

As our journey takes us on a new path, join us on our adventure at our Care for Orphans, Send the Butler fund.

We are disappointed. This is cause for sadness for us and the orphan homes, but we look forward to the trip in August.

All funds collected will be applied to the trip in August. So, if you have any questions, please contact us at mbschool6@gmail.com

Here are some of the facts surrounding the postponement:

  • Coronavirus in South Korea–CDC warning, avoid nonessential travel
  • Coronavirus spread around the world–animated map of confirmed cases of Coronavirus as it spread across the world
  • Coronavirus precautions for the US–prevention, treatment

How should Christians talk about Coronavirus? From this article, stop the panic and start to pray. Moreover, trust in the truth of the Word of God.

“We pray for the people of China and other nations where this virus is spreading. Our hearts go out to those who are sick and suffering and to the families who are grieving the loss of loved ones.”

Prayer of Franklin Graham
Pray. Give. Share. (August 4-17, 2020)

An emotional story of the power of a visit

Care for orphans, Send the Butler’s

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world (James 1:27).”

I felt like an orphan when I left for college in the Fall of 1983. I was 18 years old. I did not know any one in Winona Lake, IN where Grace College was located. I was departing family from New Mexico to travel over 1,500 miles away. Although a new adventure, I would be the first in my family to start college and eventually graduate. My family dropped me off the first week of school and my family visited me at my graduation. No visits from them in Indiana for four years. But I persevered. God enabled me to graduate with family prayers and wonderful gifts and encouragement from many people. I may have felt like an orphan–but I was not an orphan. My parents and extended family were always there for me, even if they were 1,500 miles away.

But when I became pastor of cross-cultural ministries at Grace Church in 2008, I learned what an orphan faces by visiting orphans in SE Asia in 2011. Grace Church partners with Asia’s Hope where we now support and help care for four orphan homes with about 108 children in SE Asia.

In 2012, my wife Melissa and I got the opportunity to visit orphans in SE Asia. We discovered what a hardship they faced. Always at-risk for human trafficking, orphan children had little hope. But Asia’s Hope provided wonderful, family-based care and we got to visit seeing first hand how their lives changed from hopelessness to lives of hope.

Our lives changed with that visit.

God prompted us to start sponsoring a young girl with Asia’s Hope. Although we are over 8,000 miles apart, we are able to care for her through the sponsorship of Grace Church. All it took was a visit.

Every time we visit the orphans we are blessed in a greater way than the blessing that we offer. Knowing that we can intervene and help a young orphan have a future hope in Christ makes all the difference. Melissa and I look forward to this visit–a visit that offers hope and a blessing.

Care for Orphans, Send the Butler’s

DO YOU WANT TO REACH THE WORLD FOR CHRIST WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR LIVING ROOM?

Daron, Melissa, and Micah Butler will travel to Cambodia and Thailand to serve at-risk orphan children by visiting to encourage the rescued orphans, their house parents and home staff, and their country directors from March 24-April 6, 2020.

Daron, Micah, Melissa–the Butler’s

Asia’s Hope Orphan Homes are supported by Grace Church, so we have the privilege of encouraging , praying for, & supporting all four orphan homes, every house parent and child in the homes as well as ministering to other ministry partners.

We must raise $5,000 by March 17 before our trip.  Funds raised will be used for our flights & travel expenses while serving in Thailand & Cambodia.  Your financial support will further God’s Kingdom by bringing hope and joy to the 100+ rescued orphans we will serve.

We will launch the GoFundMe campaign on Valentine’s Day and complete it on St Patrick’s Day. Why? Because St Valentine was a person who showed God’s love to others and because St. Patrick shared God’s love cross-culturally to others who enslaved him.  Launching on Valentine’s Day when romantic love is popularized, helps us accentuate God’s love for all people as well as love for your fellow man. Ending on St Patrick’s Day when one man took the good news to Ireland to share God’s love is what every follower of Christ ought to do–share Christ with all people.

So, join our team:
 – PRAY: Send email to 2daronbutler@gmail.com to let us know you will pray for us.

The Next Adventure: Hospice Chaplain

First day of work at LifeCare Hospice

Last year I shared that a transition was happening in my life in November 2019 serving as Hospice Chaplain at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster, Ohio. I started my new adventure and I enjoy helping people and their families deal with the end of life where I can assist people to live as long as they can and as well as they can.

What is LifeCare Hospice? LifeCare Hospice focuses its mission to enhance the quality of life for patients and their families by providing them with compassionate care, support, and grief resources during times of serious illness and loss.

Who would want to use LifeCare Hospice? LifeCare Hospice is a great resource for anyone wanting help and support for their loved ones who are facing the end of life. You can learn how helpful hospice can be as a support for you and your family before and after death. LifeCare Hospice ensures access to quality hospice care.

Where I am serving as chaplain? I am serving in Wooster, Ohio. Thus, thankfully, my family and I will continue to worship at Grace Church and after some time figuring out the new normal I will find the best places to serve at Grace Church.

LifeCare Hospice is located at 1900 Akron Road, Wooster OH 44691.

What am I doing? I will serve as one of five full-time chaplains to celebrate the lives of those I have the privilege of serving by providing excellent care and excellent services to each patient and family as we journey together towards the end of life on this earth.

LifeCare Hospice 1900 Akron Rd Wooster OH 44691

Chaplains provided spiritual care to hospice patients, their families, the staff of LifeCare Hospice. Chaplains serve on an interdisciplinary team so that we can holistically care for each patient and their family. I will respect the personal beliefs of each individual while assisting each patient to be open to the spiritual experience as each person lets go of the life they have known, lived, and loved. I will continue to serve family after the loss of the loved one, providing solace and comfort, conducting funeral and memorial services to honor the lives of hospice patients.

I am personally excited about serving with LifeCare Hospice because I will be using the God-given gifts of compassion and care that have served me well over the past 25 years as a pastor.

Today begins a new venture where I can care for people during a most challenging time in their lives. I can show God’s love, care, and compassion so that each person feels loved and cared for amid difficult days.

Thanks to everyone for your support and encouragement over the past month. I am humbled to receive your prayers of commissioning and your kind words of encouragement to lift me up and to inspire me to serve others every day!

I’m Joining a New Venture in November!

It is bittersweet news to share with you that I have accepted a position as Chaplain at Life Care Hospice in Wooster, Ohio. I am excited about this next step in my ministry but I will certainly miss working at Grace Church. Yet thankfully, my family and I will continue to worship at Grace Church.

This transition is a sweet fit for me that God has opened before me. I can always move forward into a new season of ministry with growing confidence because it is so clear that God is the One opening the door.

“I am honored to serve on a team of dedicated servants of the Lord to equip the saints to strive to be fully devoted followers of Christ…I have learned a lot about ministering to all kinds of people at various seasons of their lives as well as learning about myself too. Indeed, I have discovered how serving with the S.H.A.P.E. God has given each person is best. I will take many things with me as I move forward to serve as Chaplain at LifeCare Hospice.”

Weekly Update Announcement for Grace Church

But before I look forward, I want to pause and reflect briefly on a few of the many amazing things that God has allowed me to experience over these twelve wonderful years at Grace Church.

I have witnessed life change. Not only have I seen God move in the lives of my family, neighbors, and church people, but also in the lives of international people. Whether I got to baptize my neighbor Pam or new friend Emerson from the Bahamas or heard the testimony of Denise from Brazil, I praise God for life change happening every week at Grace Church. It’s true that life change is an invitation away where people grow in authenticity and Christ-like character in a step-by-step process of spiritual growth.

I praise God that we are developing all people towards being fully devoted followers of Christ!

I have observed how people at Grace Church go all in with their lives and in serving others. I see the joy of people learning how to use their unique gifts, talents, and experiences to serve God and others. I have had the privilege of helping to equip people to discover and invest their lives in others. I am witness to countless people sharing a smile and a warm greeting at events with me. I am so psyched to hear how people are caring for one another during difficult times. I marvel at how God has uniquely shaped each person to use their special gifts and experiences to serve others. What a privilege to see “saved people, serve people.”

If you know me, then you know that people matter to me because in God’s eyes every person matters. Grace values relationships with others and understands that you cannot do life alone.

In our society, being alone is rampant. Yet, at Grace I have worked hard to nurture loving relationships with others. As much as I have benefited, I trust others have also benefited from being in relationship with me. “Life is better together!”

I have enjoyed serving with our church staff. They are great teammates. They laugh. They tease. They work hard. They love people. I can say that they are caring, loyal people. I am grateful to have served with them. I love you all! I am honored to be co-workers with the church staff. I will miss serving together with you on staff.

To the church family, I have always striven to love each person with God’s love in my heart. It will be difficult to adjust to the new normal. For all the challenges and victories, God allowed me to see His greatness on display. Many made wise choices, few chose unwisely, but still you shared your life with me. I appreciate your kindness. I will miss listening to the highs and lows of your life. I trust that you know how I sought to show God’s love in a real way to each of you.

I also want to add: While writing my resignation letter last week was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, the positivity that has poured out from Pastor Steve Kern and Pastor Nick Cleveland, the Next Steps team, church staff, church family, my friends and my family has been amazing. I am confident that Pastor Steve Kern will handle all the missions aspects of my role with care, love, and timely action. He will be the point person to gather my responsibilities and then distribute things according to his oversight.

And as Sunday, November 3 draws near and marks the end of my time here at Grace Church, so too it marks the start of time off between Grace Church and my new adventure with LifeCare Hospice as chaplain. I will take time off to visit my father in New Mexico and to unwind before embarking on a new venture. On Sunday, November 18 I begin that new adventure. I am apprehensive, but as my friend Mark related, “Your anxiety level about your new venture is sky-high because your knowledge base is at zero. As you build up your knowledge base, the anxiety will decrease.” I’m up for that kind of challenge. What I am going to do requires a whole new vocabulary, different hours, a new team, and a new pattern of helping others in hospice care.

At any rate, I am finishing my time at Grace Church — where I have many more fond memories and victories than space to convery— and diving head first into the challenging world of hospice care as Chaplain at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster, Ohio.

I look forward to sharing more in just over a month’s time. Until then, you can count on me to be caring for people who cross my path and pointing them to Christ with a BIG smile and a warm and friendly greeting.

There’s always a next step.
